Homeless Authority Holds Strategy Session

Share

The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority held the first of several public hearings Thursday designed to let homeless agencies coordinate their strategies.

The meeting, held in South-Central Los Angeles, was attended by several agencies that work under the umbrella of the authority, a joint city-county operation that coordinates homeless services.

The key issue is the disparity between the estimated 84,000 people in the county who are homeless on any given night and the availability of only 10,000 beds for them.

Much of Thursday’s discussion was about the pending award of grants by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Last year, HUD awarded Los Angeles city and county homeless agencies $40 million in grants; a similar figure is expected this year. “It sounds like a lot of money, but it is not nearly enough” said Maya Dunne, planning manager of the authority.

The next public hearing will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Jan Clayton Center, 4969 Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood.
