Bolsa Chica, Shooting Range Occupy Council

The city shooting range and a Bolsa Chica housing development--two of the hottest topics in the city these days--will be hashed out during a City Council workshop Monday.

Koll Co. is planning a 2,500-home community on the Bolsa Chica mesa, in unincorporated Orange County surrounded by Huntington Beach. The City Council is examining the plan’s potential impact on city services such as sewage, police, fire, traffic, libraries and water. In particular, local environmental and citizens’ groups have spoken out about whether the city should let Koll hook up to its water system, and at what price.

Mayor Ralph H. Bauer said the City Council hopes to “get some implied consensus” regarding the services it might provide Koll, then possibly have another meeting later to determine a strategy for City Administrator Michael T. Uberuaga in his dealings with the developer.

In addition, the council will hear a subcommittee report on the Central Park gun range, operated by the Huntington Beach Police Officers Assn. Citing noise and safety concerns, the city decided not to renew the union’s lease.

The council will review options for the range, including relocation or rebuilding. The city’s Community Services Commission has recommended moving it to a site on Gothard Street, near Golden West College, which needs the range for its police academy.

The workshop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall, 2000 Main St.
