Rooting for a Good Angel Team

Share

I read with some amusement the largely negative comments concerning the Angels’ new “look” for 1997 (“New Angel Uniform Is an Error, Fans Say,” Feb. 16).

I mean, they’re not that bad. I think they’re a step backward from the classical style of the last few years, but they’d be seen as a major improvement over the bland “plain wrap” uniforms of the ‘70s and ‘80s.

I got a great chuckle out of the fan from Yorba Linda who was glad she was a Padre fan, because the San Diego franchise would never foist such a thing on their fans.

I think the lady’s memory needs a little help, since in the early ‘80s, the Padres perpetrated the most hideous uniforms in the history of organized baseball: the yellow and brown “Taco Bell” look.

But I hope the Angels and their Disney owners don’t think that new uniforms and a redesigned stadium are going to put more [people] in the bleachers. They also have to field a team worthy of rooting for, and also ditch the contests, performers and distractions that now pollute the experience of attending an Angel baseball game.

Disney may be God’s gift to theme parks and animated movies (just ask them), but they have yet to show that they know a lick about running a baseball team.
