Falcons Obtain Chandler From Oilers for Two 1997 Draft Picks
The Atlanta Falcons acquired quarterback Chris Chandler, a player whom Coach Dan Reeves thinks will turn around the beleaguered team, from the Houston Oilers for two undisclosed 1997 draft choices Monday.
“We believe he gives us a chance where we can win immediately,” Reeves said. “We feel like he gives us the ability to compete. He’s a guy who can get the job done.”
Asked if Chandler would be the starter, Reeves said, “Right now, he’s the only one we’ve got.”
Last year’s early season starter, Jeff George, was suspended and subsequently released by the Falcons after a sideline shouting match with then-coach June Jones. Bobby Hebert, who succeeded George, is contemplating retirement. The Falcons also had talked to San Francisco 49er backup quarterback Elvis Grbac, but said that they will not pursue him now.
Chandler, a 10-year pro, has two years remaining on his contract. In two seasons at Houston, Chandler completed 409 of 676 passes for 4,559 yards with 33 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
