City Signs Pact for Fiber-Optic Network
The City Council this week approved a 30-year agreement with SpectraNet International of San Diego to build, design and operate a citywide fiber-optic telecommunications system to serve businesses, government offices and ultimately residents.
“This system will offer a menu of services . . . conveniently delivered and priced reasonably,” Mayor Tom Daly said. “We’ll have the best possible technology.”
The network will offer voice, video, data, multimedia, and local and long-distance phone service. Next month, SpectraNet will start the first phase, estimated to cost $80 million, in the city’s commercial districts and aim to have it operating in July.
Subsequent phases of the project, costing an estimated $175 million, will extend the network to the rest of the city, including residential areas. Completion of the entire system is set for 2002.
