Larry Stewart; Former Head of TV Academy

Larry Stewart, 67, four-time Emmy winner and former president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Stewart was the group’s first president after its separation from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 1977, and in 1995 won its Syd Cassyd Founders Award for distinguished service. He co-founded the academy’s college intern program. Stewart, who earned his local Emmys for documentaries he produced for KNBC-TV Channel 4, directed more than 200 episodes of prime-time television, including segments of such series as “The Waltons,” “Police Woman,” “The Bionic Woman” and “Fantasy Island.” He also produced, wrote and directed the “Thrill Seekers” series starring Chuck Connors. As casting director at 20th Century Fox, Stewart was credited with discovering Barbara Eden and Barbara Hershey. Stewart had been a child actor and was the original Video Ranger in “Captain Video.” He had been planning to direct a documentary about asthma for PBS.
