Region Expected to Stay Cool and Breezy

The San Fernando Valley will be cool and breezy with a slight chance of getting damp this week, thanks to a strong low-pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska.

The counterclockwise circulation of winds around the system has tapped into cold polar air and sent it flowing against the western coast of the United States, said Bill Hoffer, a spokesman for the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

“It also serves to keep our nights cold,” Hoffer said. Low temperatures will be in the upper 30s most of the week, he said. High temperatures will be in the 60s, but may push into the 70s later in the week.

“This has been going on for about 10 days now,” Hoffer said. “This is a rather common occurrence for this time of year.”

The low-pressure system is moving very slowly, and any change would not occur until early Friday, Hoffer said. Then wind patterns could shift from a flow coming mainly out of the north to one coming primarily from the west. That would bring in more warm air from the Pacific Ocean.

There is a 10% chance of rain for Southern California on Thursday, but mostly in northern regions, Hoffer said.

High temperatures today are expected to be 66 in Burbank and 67 in Woodland Hills.
