Hikers Find Skull in Remote Area

Hikers in a remote area here discovered what is believed to be a human skull, authorities said Sunday.

Deputies from the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, aided by the department’s rescue helicopter, recovered the skull Saturday afternoon, said Deputy Bob Killeen.

“Just a skull was found,” Killeen said. “They searched the immediate area but didn’t turn anything [else] up.”

The skull, which was turned over to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office for further investigation, appeared to have been in the area for “an extended period of time,” Killeen said.

The hikers were in a creek bed about an hour’s hike from the nearest road in “extremely difficult terrain” in Topanga State Park when they made the discovery, Killeen said.

An official with the coroner’s office Sunday said the skull had not yet been examined.
