An autopsy is scheduled today for a golf course superintendent who apparently suffered a heart attack behind the wheel of his car while leaving work and died a short time later, authorities said.

Alexander Alvidrez, 48, of Oxnard was driving through the parking lot of the Elkins Ranch Golf Course, 1386 Chambersburg Road, around 3:10 p.m. when he lost control of his car and ran into a fence, according to Senior Deputy Coroner Mitch Breese.

A bystander began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but when paramedics arrived, Alvidrez was not responsive, said Robert Snyder, field operations supervisor for MedTrans Ambulance.

While awaiting the arrival of a Ventura County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, paramedics restarted Alvidrez’s heart with a defibrillator, Snyder said. Air unit paramedics continued the life-saving effort en route to Simi Valley Hospital.

However, Alvidrez died about 3:41 p.m. in the hospital emergency room, authorities said.

Breese said the cause of death is not yet known, but authorities suspect that Alvidrez suffered a heart attack.

On Sunday night, an employee of the golf course said Alvidrez was in charge of the grounds for the facility.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their two children.
