Parents Back Idea of Character Education

A proposal to incorporate character education lessons into the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District curriculum is receiving solid support from parents.

The district got back more than 4,000 parent surveys this month, with nearly 3,600 parents rating character education as a priority.

“The results were overwhelmingly positive in terms of support,” Assistant Supt. Sharon McHolland said.

Respect, integrity, responsibility, self-discipline, civic duty and compassion topped the list of character traits the district will attempt to teach students.

The way those traits will be taught has not been decided yet. The character education committee was supposed to make curriculum recommendations to the district last week, but members still had more information to review, McHolland said.

The committee is scheduled to make a final recommendation at its March 26 meeting, and school board trustees will review the plan in April.

Trustee Craig Olson said the district met with principals, parents, teachers and students at individual schools and sought ideas from business and religious community leaders before compiling the survey.

“We tried to come up with a list of character traits that could be considered ‘core values’ with which no one disagreed,” he said.
