Slumping Panthers Lose Again

Tim Sweeney scored two third-period goals and Jim Carey made 26 saves as the Boston Bruins, one of the NHL’s worst teams, won, 3-1, handing the slumping Florida Panthers their fourth consecutive loss at Miami.

It was the first four-game losing streak of the season for the Panthers, who have only one win in their last 11 games (1-8-2).

The victory was the Bruins’ second consecutive in Florida after a 6-4 victory in Tampa on Saturday broke a nine-game winless streak on the road.

Edmonton 4, St. Louis 1--Doug Weight had two goals and an assist, rookie Mike Grier had two goals and goalie Curtis Joseph stopped 26 shots to lead the Oilers at St. Louis.

The Blues lost their fifth game in a row for the second time this season. They have scored a total of 10 goals during the streak.

Edmonton took a 2-1 lead when Weight scored his 16th goal with 47 seconds remaining in the second period. Weight picked up a loose puck at the Edmonton blue line and skated in untouched to beat Grant Fuhr with a low slapshot.

Tampa Bay 2, Calgary 1--Rob Zamuner scored his 13th goal of the season with 2:40 remaining in overtime, and Tampa Bay goalie Corey Schwab made 44 saves at Tampa.

After Flames’ goalie Dwayne Roloson made a game-saving stop of a Paul Ysebaert shot, Zamuner took a pass from defenseman Cory Cross and shot into the right side of the net.

New York Rangers 2, San Jose 1--Niklas Sundstrom scored his 22nd goal of the season late in the second period and Wayne Gretzky had two assists to lead the Rangers at San Jose.

Gretzky leads the NHL with 66 assists.

Philadelphia 5, Washington 0--John LeClair scored two goals and Eric Lindros had four assists and Flyers won at Philadelphia.

Goalie Ron Hextall stopped 15 shots for fourth shutout of the season and 18th career shutout. Hextall, fighting for a starting position, made his first start since March 1.

New Jersey 4, Buffalo 1--John MacLean assisted two of New Jersey’s three goals in the second period to lead the Devils at Buffalo.

Steve Thomas, Denis Pederson and Valeri Zelepukin each scored for the Devils. Dave Andreychuk scored into an open net with 58 seconds to play for his his 499th career goal.
