Council to Consider Telecom Ordinance

Share

An ordinance that would regulate telecommunications devices in public areas will be considered by the City Council tonight.

Although drafted in response to a recent application to install wireless modems on utility poles, city officials say the proposed ordinance would help deal with the rapid expansion of the telecommunications industry.

Wireless modems permit computers to be connected by radio rather than telephone lines.

“Telecommunications firms have rights to access public facilities,” City Atty. Lois Jeffrey said. “We can establish reasonable guidelines as long as they apply to everybody.”

Under the proposed ordinance, companies seeking to use public facilities would have to register with the city. The proposed law could also require establishment of a franchise to do business in Laguna Hills.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall, 25201 Paseo de Alicia, Suite 150.
