Two Orange County students are winners of national scholarships.

Hiep Nguyen, a ninth-grader at Santa Ana High School, is one of 18 students nationwide and the only one from California awarded a scholarship to the Choate Rosemary Hall prep school in Connecticut.

Icahn Scholars, founded by investor Carl Icahn, is a $3.8-million program to give financial aid to 72 students from around the world over the next four years. The program will pay 40% of the young scholars’ tuition, room and board, books and travel expenses; Choate will pay the rest.

Nguyen, who emigrated from Vietnam with his family about five years ago, was recommended for the scholarship by local educational consultant Paula Feldman. Scholarships were awarded on the basis of grades, extracurricular activities and economic need.

An essay on changing technologies won a $3,000 scholarship for Mindy Titus, a senior at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa. She is the first Estancia student awarded the Forbes Enterprise Scholarship and one of only four from Southern California.

At the end of the month she will travel to New York to be honored for her achievement and to meet publisher and 1996 Republican presidential candidate Steve Forbes, who established the scholarship program in cooperation with Junior Achievement, which gives students first-hand business experience.

Titus is one of 80 winners nationwide. Applicants submitted essays and were interviewed by local Junior Achievement officials.
