Rollin’ on Columbia to Pendleton Roundup

Cruise the great Columbia on board American West steamboat company’s paddle-wheel riverboat Queen of the West. This Pendleton Roundup theme cruise will sail round trip from Portland, Ore. Sept. 6 for seven nights. The Queen of the West, a 163-passenger ship built in 1995, is informal with turn-of-the-century decor. From Portland the ship sails the Willamette River to the Columbia River through the Columbia River Gorge.

Also featured is a visit to Multnomah Falls and The Dalles. There will be a country and western day in Pendleton, which includes a barbecue and a pioneer and Native American show. On the Snake River guests take a jet boat ride into Hells Canyon on the Oregon-Idaho border. The staterooms all have river views.

Yosemite After Rain

The aftermath of flooding this past January in Yosemite will be the focus of a photo tour to the national park May 1 to 4. Participants will photograph the changed course of the Merced River, several of the park’s famous waterfalls, and many of the park’s points of interest, including Half Dome and El Capitan.

Finland Sampler

Norvista’s nine-day Scenic Finland tour allows vacationers the opportunity to sample the sights. Hudson Valley in the full bloom of summer is a good time to view sites along the river in upstate New York. The Hudson River Homes and Gardens tour departs June 22 from Albany, N.Y. At Home in France

Stay two weeks with a French family in Aix-en-Provence April 26 to May 10. Participants will have a chance to immerse themselves in French culture. There will be five hands-on cooking classes in a mansion of the Provencal style. Tours will be taken around the area, including Avignon, Martigues, Aubagne, Ni^mes and Toulon. Guests also visit the wine cellars of Coteaux d’Aix, a city known for its beautiful fountains, mansions and gardens. Let Them Eat Turkey

A culinary tour of Istanbul, Turkey, is available on three dates, June 5 to 7, Sept. 11 to 13 and Oct. 16 to 18. These three-day tours are meant to give the participant a taste of the area before they travel independently in Turkey.

The dining experiences will include an Ottoman restaurant and a traditional dinner in the old Beyoglu district, offering an array of appetizers. Participants will also sample foods at markets. Guests will tour the city to see the Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque.

Irish Film Fest

The Galway Film Festival and Arts Festival in Ireland are featured on a study tour from July 8 to 20. The tour features an opening dinner at Bunratty Castle, a full day tour of the Dingle Peninsula, the Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands. In Galway participants will see events associated with the Galway Film Festival and Arts Festival. There will also be a performance by the Druid Theater Company. On the way to Dublin, the group will visit Newgrange and the Hill of Tara. The stay in Dublin features a visit to the Irish Film Center and a drama lecture at the Writers’ Centre. Performances are scheduled at the Abbey theater and the Peacock. One day will be spent in Powerscourt Gardens and the Glendalough 16th century monastic settlement. The final night’s dinner, with traditional Irish music, will be in one of Dublin’s pubs.

Seeing Siena

A 10-night tour to the Tuscany and Umbria regions of Italy runs June 28 to July 9. Participants will spend the first two nights in Assisi, visit the nearby Basilica of St. Francis and explore the many art treasures of this historical hill town. Arrive in Siena just in time to witness the colorful festivities leading up to Il Palio. Participants may attend this historical pageant and horse race (bleacher seats not included). A tour of the city will be conducted by professor Itala Rutter during the four-day stay. A visit is made to the walled fortress of Monteriggioni on the way to San Gimignano. During the three-day stay in San Gimignano, participants will visit local wineries, Volterra and Florence. The last night will be spent in Rome.

Science on Site

Explore the roots of Western science in Italy, France and England with William McComas, a professor of science education at USC. Sites of historical breakthroughs in science, medicine and natural history will be seen in Italy, France and England. The tour, July 14 to Aug. 3, is co-sponsored by the Natural History Museum and the National Science Teachers Assn.

Participants will walk through Rome to explore monastery libraries, then move on to Renaissance Florence, Pisa and Venice, where knowledge was reawakened by Galileo and his contemporaries.

In Southern France the group will look at cave paintings and in Paris explore the Jardin des Plantes and the work of Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. In London, the spotlight will be on classic discoveries made by British scientists, and will include tours of Cambridge and Oxford, as well as the homes of Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.
