Fog, Drizzle to Give Way to Sun, Warmth

The fog and slight drizzle that came into the San Fernando Valley on Sunday courtesy of the Catalina eddy will clear up by this afternoon, weather forecasters said.

“It will be gradually decreasing cloudiness as the sun breaks through,” said Stuart Seto, a spokesman for the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

The Catalina eddy is a low-pressure system that encircles its namesake island. As the system’s counterclockwise winds build up, they gather moisture from the ocean and boost the marine layer along the coast, Seto said.

This is slightly early in the season for the Catalina eddy’s influence to be felt. Usually it begins to affect the weather in April and is at its strongest in June.

A high-pressure system pushing into the region will break up the eddy this afternoon and evening, bringing warmer temperatures and clear skies later in the week, Seto said.

As a result, temperatures Tuesday will reach the upper 80s and hit the low 90s Wednesday. On Thursday, temperatures should drop to the mid-80s again.

High temperatures today are expected to be 71 in Woodland Hills and 70 in Burbank.
