Students to Take Part in ‘History Day’ Event

Using pens, poster board and videotape to explore history, 32 students will vie in a “History Day” competition Tuesday at Moorpark’s Chaparral Middle School.

The event is part of a statewide history contest that will culminate in May with a three-day competition in Sacramento.

Participating students were given a theme--triumph and tragedy in history--and allowed to research topics either close to home or far away.

Then students assembled presentations to reflect their research. Presentations can be as simple as drawings to accompany a report or as elaborate as a play written around a historical episode.

This year’s projects cover topics ranging from Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers to Ronald Reagan. Three teachers will judge the entries.

The projects will be on public display from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday in the library at Chaparral, 290 Poindexter Ave.
