Dole to Head Drive for WWII Memorial
Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole has agreed to lead the $100-million fund-raising effort for a World War II memorial to be built on the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.
Dole, a decorated World War II veteran who was the 1996 Republican presidential nominee, is scheduled to announce his affiliation with the project on Wednesday, associates familiar with his plans said Monday.
The design for the memorial was unveiled in January, on the same day President Clinton presented his campaign rival the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award. Dole, 73, was gravely wounded in Italy during the war, losing the use of his right arm.
The monument will be built on a 7.4-acre rectangle at the heart of the Mall. To be constructed of limestone and granite, it consists of two half circles of 40-foot-high columns surrounding a large memorial plaza lowered 15 feet below the surface.
