A woman was struck and killed Thursday on the San Diego Freeway while trying to flee her disabled car with her 22-month-old daughter in her arms.

The child suffered moderate injuries, California Highway Patrol Officer Richard Perez said.

The woman, whose identity was not released, was believed to be about 20 years old. She suffered massive head and neck trauma and was thrown over the guardrail after she was struck by a passing vehicle, Perez said.

Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department pronounced the woman dead at the scene, said Jim Wells, a spokesman for the Fire Department.

The toddler was taken to Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles for treatment of a broken leg, authorities said.

The accident occurred just before noon in the southbound carpool lane near Rinaldi Street, according to authorities.

The southbound side of the freeway and the northbound carpool lane--where the woman’s body came to rest--were shut down for about two hours as officers investigated the accident.

It did not appear to be an alcohol-related incident, Perez said. No arrests were made and the accident remained under investigation Thursday night.
