Pawn Shop Records Subpoenaed

A federal subpoena demands any city records of pawn shop deals with Fresno State basketball guard Chris Herren, the Fresno Bee reported Friday in a copyright story.

The subpoena specifically asks for records of any transactions between Herren and United Loan and Jewelry of Fresno.

Herren, the leading scorer for the Bulldogs during a 20-12 season, denied pawning any items or buying anything from United Loan or its owner, Dan Jelladian.

“I’m not worried about [the subpoena],” Herren said Thursday. “I never did anything with him.”

Jelladian said Herren twice visited his pawn shop but did not buy anything.

The Bee reported that an unnamed Fresno police official said the department has no pawn records that involve Herren.

Karagozian’s firm also represents point guard Dominick Young, who the Bee has reported is the focus of an investigation by the FBI and federal grand jury into possible point-shaving by Fresno State basketball players.

Deputy city attorney Larry Donaldson said he released the subpoena to the Bee on Thursday after the FBI told him withholding it would no longer have any significant impact on the point-shaving investigation. Under California law, pawn shop brokers must report all transactions to local police.
