One Man Makes Difference in MLS

Goalkeeper Dave Salzwedel registered a regulation-time shutout, then scored the winning shootout goal as the San Jose Clash defeated the New York-New Jersey MetroStars, 1-0, Saturday night before 23,501 in the opening match of Major League Soccer’s second season.

Salzwedel beat MetroStar goalkeeper Tony Meola in the 11th round of the shootout, which the Clash won, 4-3.

Jeff Baicher, Dominic Kinnear and Ramiro Corrales also scored in the shootout for the Clash.

San Jose became the first MLS team in history to start a lineup entirely composed of American players.
