The Chicago Blackhawks scored on three of their first four shots in the first 7 minutes 19 seconds of the first period and held on to a 5-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday at Chicago.

Jim Cummins, Eric Daze and Alexei Zhamnov connected on consecutive shots during a 1:56 span to chase Detroit starting goalie Mike Vernon.

“We capitalized on their mistakes,” Chicago Coach Craig Hartsburg said. “They left their goaltender out to dry a couple of times.”

Sergei Krivokrasov also scored twice for the Blackhawks, who are tied with Calgary for eighth place, the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Red Wings outshot Chicago, 8-1, 3:16 into the game. But Chicago goalie Chris Terreri made the saves, and Vernon would later struggle.

“We had a good start, had some pressure and didn’t score,” said Detroit Coach Scotty Bowman. “It wasn’t disturbing, just ineffective.”

Philadelphia 2, Colorado 0--Playing without captain Eric Lindros, the Flyers got a strong outing from goalie Ron Hextall and goals from Pat Falloon and Joel Otto to win at Philadelphia in a game matching the Eastern and Western Conference leaders.

Hextall stopped 19 shots to earn his fourth shutout of the season.

Lindros suffers from a bruised right calf.

Dallas 4, St. Louis 1--At St. Louis, Mike Modano had a goal and an assist when the Stars played short-handed, Jere Lehtinen scored two goals and the Stars extended their unbeaten streak to a season-high eight games.
