Trustees to Discuss Dress Code for Staff

Share

After mandating uniforms for students, the school board tonight will discuss whether to set a dress code for district staff members.

The issue arose last December, when trustees of Santa Ana Unified School District established a uniform policy for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Trustee Rosemarie Avila said the proposal to set a dress code for staff members arose from a suggestion that similar standards be observed districtwide. Some board members said that teachers “should also be dressed professionally,” Avila said. The policy would apply to all staff members.

A discussion of the issue is on the meeting agenda, but no vote is likely yet, officials said.

The board tonight also will consider dropping its membership in the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce. Board members have raised concerns because of the $1,205 annual fee and because the chamber is involved in local elections through its political action committee.

Board members Nativo V. Lopez, Aida Espinoza and Rosemarie Avila have questioned the benefits of continued membership.

The school board will meet at 7 p.m. at district headquarters, 1601 E. Chestnut Ave. Information: (714) 558-5555.
