Panel of Educators to Address Cloning

Share

A panel of Pierce College educators will discuss the facts, ethical issues and future of cloning Thursday in a free lecture sponsored by the college’s philosophy/sociology department.

Instructors from the fields of science and philosophy will explain the process of cloning, as well as the implications of putting it into practice.

“The public needs to know what cloning is and what it is not, and what it means to have the power to reproduce ourselves,” said program coordinator Nicholas Habib, a philosophy instructor who teaches general ethics.

The announcement last month that a Scottish scientist cloned an adult sheep brought the issue to the forefront of public consciousness.

Panelists will include Pierce instructors Martin Ikkanda, a biology instructor who will explain cloning; Betty Odello, a philosophy instructor who teaches a course in bioethics, and Lee Shapiro, an animal science instructor who teaches a course in the ethical use of animals.

The public discussion is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. in the college’s campus center, 6201 Winnetka Ave.
