Trustees Hire Architect for Proposed School

Trustees of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District agreed this week to hire an architect to draw up plans for a new school at McFadden Park in Placentia.

Despite voicing concerns that the district should receive a commitment from Placentia officials that they support the proposed 200-student campus, trustees voted 4 to 1 to spend $5,000 for preliminary plans.

“I can’t see spending money at this point, not knowing if they’re interested,” said Trustee Roseann Thorn, who dissented. “Otherwise, it’s like throwing money away.”

But district officials said the architect, LPA Inc. in Irvine, will propose options for the site so that school district officials can approach the city with a realistic plan.

“All this is, is for us to bring an architect out to tell us what is possible so we can have some talking points with the city,” Supt. James O. Fleming said. “There is no deal at this point.”

The school board decided last month to look into opening a small elementary site at McFadden Park to ease overcrowding at Rio Vista Elementary School in Anaheim.
