Fritz Spielmann; Composer of Popular Songs

Fritz Spielmann, 90, composer of such hit songs as “Paper Roses,” “Shepherd Serenade” and “One Finger Melody.” Those top-selling tunes were recorded respectively by Marie Osmond, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Born in Vienna, Spielmann studied piano and composing at the Academy of Music in Vienna. Moving to the United States in 1939, he performed piano recitals and wrote music for motion pictures, including “Abilene Town,” “Torch Song,” “Nancy Goes to Rio,” “Good Old Summertime” and “Girls, Girls, Girls.” Spielmann also wrote scores for Broadway and off-Broadway shows, among them “A Lady Says Yes,” “Take My Heart With You” and “Peter Rabbit.” On Friday in New York.
