Ex-Mayor, Retired Teacher to Be Honored

A former mayor and a retired teacher are among six local women who will be honored Wednesday for their contributions to the city.

More than 50 women have been recognized by the San Fernando Chamber of Commerce for their cultural and economic contributions to the city since the annual event was established a decade ago, chamber spokesman Joe Sandoval said.

“It’s a difficult choice because each year there are a lot of standout women and not all of them are high profile,” Sandoval said.

“These people don’t necessarily toot their own horns, but they have had phenomenal success in their own areas,” Sandoval said.

This year’s honorees are former Mayor Rosa Chacon, Mary Askenazy, president of Pueblo Contracting Services; Mirta Liberman, co-owner of Centro del Hogar furniture stores; Lydia Soto, San Fernando High School teacher, and Sarah Magana-Withers, a senior community preservation officer with the city’s Community Development Department.

The final recipient, retired teacher Marjorie Britt, will receive a special lifetime service award.

The luncheon, which costs $16, will begin at noon at the Odyssey restaurant, 15600 Odyssey Drive in Granada Hills.
