Because the Angels start the season three days after completing their three-game Freeway Series against the Dodgers on Sunday, Manager Terry Collins said that some members of the team will play against Cal State Fullerton on Monday.

“We’re just banged up. I’ve never been through a spring training where so many players and coaches have had injuries like we’ve been through,” Collins said. “The thing is that so many were non-baseball injuries.”

Infielder Randy Velarde, who injured his throwing arm earlier this month, is not expected to return any time soon. He will continue to get treatment and will be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum today. . . . Pitcher Pete Janicki, who had a 21.94 ERA in six spring appearances, was optioned to triple-A Vancouver and pitcher Robert Ellis was taken off the team’s 40-man roster.
