A group of about 40 parents in Huntington Beach City School District has set up a fund-raising organization to support the Peterson school, set to reopen this fall.

The school district decided to reopen Peterson school to reduce class sizes on other campuses, thus taking advantage of a statewide program that offers a bonus to schools that limit enrollment in primary grade classes to 20 pupils.

“We’re trying to get all the negative out and deal with the immediate issue, which is getting the school up and running,” member Stacy Ardis said.

“We want our school to be just as wonderful as the schools our kids are coming out of. We need to earn money so we can get programs up and running as quickly as possible.”

The group, which started fund-raising four months ago, has brought in about $600 by selling candy, Ardis said.

Members plan to set up a founders book club to encourage people to buy books and donate them to the school library.

The group also is arranging a tile sale in which parents and students would be able to buy tiles that would be decorated and then placed on the campus.
