Big Trucks
“Fiery OC Traffic Crash Kills 4,” (March 27) is a tragic, grim reminder of the dangers of freeway driving.
NAFTA will be putting more trucks on the road. The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act will expire on Sept. 30. During the ISTEA reauthorization, various proposals of surface transportation programs will be considered. One issue is to lift the freeze on size and weight of trucks, allowing states to set their own standards. This could mean longer combination vehicles in California. Such trucks can be as long as 120 feet and weigh as much as 130,000 pounds.
