Event Aids Women’s Powers of Persuasion

Share

Women who want to learn how to be more persuasive with clients, bosses or potential employers can get free advice and support at “Putting Punch in Your Presentations,” a seminar hosted by the Thousand Oaks branch of the American Assn. of University Women.

The seminar, slated for Monday, will help women learn how to sell their ideas, said Michal Orenstein, a career consultant and member of AAUW.

“It’s part of a series that we hope will provide our members and the community with skills and information about surviving in the ‘90s, both professionally and personally,” Orenstein said. “The gist of this program is, ‘How do I sell any idea I have to someone, whether in a job interview, to a boss, to get a grant, or begin a new program?’ ”

Larry Caris, a specialist in sales, management and team building, will conduct the seminar. His clients include Baskin-Robbins, Honeywell and Price-Costco.

The American Assn. of University Women, founded in 1881, was a leader in the fight for women’s rights, organizers say. National membership totals 150,000 college graduates. California accounts for 2,000 members.

“Our goal is to provide educational equity for women and girls,” Orenstein said.

Previous seminars included “The Balancing Act,” which advised how to set priorities, and “Your Personal Best,” suggestions on how women can evaluate their skills and accomplishments.

A May 13 presentation, “Mirror Mirror on the Wall,” will give women a chance to speak with a professional image consultant.

“Putting Punch in Your Presentations” will be held at 7 p.m. at the Goebel Senior Center, 1385 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks. It is free.
