From Times Staff and Wire Reports

County emergency managers warned National Weather Service Director Joe Friday that budget cuts at the National Hurricane Center in Miami could lead to costly false alarms and unnecessary evacuations, even loss of confidence in the center’s predictions. That, in turn, could put more residents in harm’s way if they ignore evacuation orders, the officials warned. Friday said the agency must absorb cuts of $27.5 million, including loss of 15 jobs at the hurricane center.
