King update--The Kings are in position either to help the Mighty Ducks by defeating Phoenix, which is battling Anaheim for home-ice advantage in the Western Conference playoffs, or help themselves with a loss and secure a better position in this year’s draft. The Kings have lost three in a row and have only 62 points. For the first time since 1972, the Kings are headed for their second consecutive season without a 30-goal scorer. Ray Ferraro leads the team with 24. Goalie Jamie Storr, 21, is expected to start his first NHL game of the season tonight.

Coyote update--When the Kings defeated Phoenix, 5-2, on Dec. 26, the Coyotes held only a four-point advantage over their Pacific Division rival. Since then, the Coyotes have posted a 20-18-2 record and are on the verge of clinching a playoff berth, and the Kings have gone 13-22-6 and dropped out of the race. Winger Jim McKenzie scored three goals for his first hat trick in the Coyotes’ 6-1 victory over the Kings in the last meeting between the teams in late February.
