Federal Funds Sought for 9 City Programs

Share

The City Council decided this week to ask the state for $500,000 in federal community development block grant money to help fund nine programs.

Each year the city applies for federal grant funding of its various housing and community development and service programs.

In the past, the city has participated in the federally funded County of Orange Community Development Block Grant program. But last June, the city decided to withdraw from the county program and apply directly to the state for the funds.

City officials said that during the past several years, funds from the county program to San Juan Capistrano dropped from around $350,000 to $150,000.

Some of the programs that would be funded by the state money are the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley, the Women’s Assistance Center and Senior Shared Housing.

If all funds requested are received, the city also will put up $100,000 toward the city’s mobile home improvement program, $236,790 for a seniors wing of the community center and $60,000 to continue funding of the city’s first-time home-buyers program.
