Students Can Cash In on Good Grades
Sure, they could lead to acceptance into college, a high-paying job and a happy life, but until now, good grades couldn’t guarantee students a cheap burger.
This semester, Monterey Park is rewarding high school students who achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher with Good Student Discount Program cards--redeemable at a variety of the city’s restaurants and stores. They are available only to high school-age Monterey Park residents.
Created by the city’s Youth Advisory Board, the cards are meant to “reward students who make education their top priority,” said Graham Mitchell, economic development specialist for the city.
Since an economic survey showed that 80% of the city’s teenagers shop in malls outside Monterey Park, the cards also are meant to drum up local business, Mitchell said.
The 18 participating businesses are offering cardholders 10% to 20% discounts on food, CDs, pet supplies and flowers.
The estimated 2,500 students who qualify can pick up their card at their high school or at the Economic Development Department in City Hall. Students should bring proof of their GPA.
