Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies patrolling Angeles National Forest shot and killed a man after he pointed what turned out to be a replica of a semiautomatic weapon at them, authorities said Saturday.

Sheriff’s investigators said the unidentified deputies stopped Friday night to check on a car parked on the side of San Gabriel Canyon Road.

As they approached, the driver, identified as Richard Boyd, 32, of South El Monte, raised his right hand and pointed what appeared to be a large silver pistol at them, investigators said.

Both deputies opened fire, hitting Boyd several times, they said.

Boyd was taken to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives later recovered a replica semiautomatic weapon that looked like a large chrome pistol inside the vehicle, investigators said.
