Ventura Beach Closed Following Sewage Spill

A mile-long stretch of beach at the mouth of the Santa Clara River was closed Sunday afternoon following a sewage spill in east Ventura.

State Parks Ranger Jerry Weil said the closure will remain in effect today while officials from the Ventura County Environmental Health Department determine how much of the material made its way into the river.

The spill occurred about 3 p.m. in the 700 block of Phoenix Avenue. Brad Clark, field lead worker for the Ventura Sanitation Department, said roots from a city-owned ficus tree blocked a pipe and sent the sewage into the gutter.

It entered a storm drain that empties into the river at Petit Avenue and North Bank Drive, Clark said.
