The Oxnard and Port Hueneme police departments will conduct a sobriety and drivers license checkpoint Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m. in Port Hueneme.

Oxnard Police Traffic Officer Peter Freiberg said the checkpoint will run through 2 a.m. Thursday at the undisclosed location. The Oxnard department has held seven checkpoints this year and 32 since the state-funded Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint Program began in 1994.

Alcohol-related crashes have dropped 35% in Oxnard since the program began, Freiberg said. Port Hueneme got involved in the program in January, and since then the number of accidents involving drinking drivers there has gone down 45%, said Port Hueneme Police Sgt. Ted Snyder.

With funding from the state Office of Traffic Safety, the departments will be able to conduct at least two checkpoints a month through December 1998.
