Nagy Proves Stingy for the Mariners

Sandy Alomar and Manny Ramirez hit home runs and Charles Nagy pitched 6 2/3 strong innings as the Indians beat the Mariners, 8-3, Monday night.

Nagy (1-0) defeated the Mariners for the fifth consecutive time since April 27, 1993, allowing one run on eight hits and one walk, while striking out eight.

Cleveland now leads the American League with 13 home runs, while Seattle’s pitchers have surrendered a dozen homers, worst in the league.

The Indians scored four runs in the second off Scott Sanders (0-2). Alomar homered in a fourth consecutive game for the first time in his career and Ramirez broke an 0-for-11 slump with his first homer of the season.

After two outs in the second, Ramirez homered to right field before Julio Franco singled and Kevin Mitchell walked. Alomar hit a 2-0 pitch by Sanders over the left-field wall.

The Indians added their fifth run in the sixth. Matt Williams walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch by Sanders and came in on a single by Franco.

In the eighth, Ramirez had a two-run double and pinch-runner Brian Giles scored when Mitchell hit into a double play for the Indians.

Edgar Martinez homered off Eric Plunk to open Seattle’s half of the eighth. Joey Cora’s run-scoring single in the ninth closed the scoring.
