Interviews for Interim Police Chief Delayed

The Los Angeles Police Commission rescheduled interviews with candidates for interim police chief, authorities announced Thursday.

The interviews were abruptly canceled last week because commissioners said they needed to review the City Council’s rejection of any buyout plan that would facilitate an early departure for Chief Willie L. Williams.

After discussing the matter with the chief, commissioners said they have decided to proceed with the interviews.

“Chief Williams has recommended that in order to ensure a smooth and seamless transition of authority, an interim chief should promptly be identified in the near future so that person may become familiar with the issues and responsibilities of the position,” according to a statement released by the commission.

The panel last month denied Williams a second five-year term. Williams’ attorneys have charged that the commission was biased and have threatened to sue the city. The chief’s term expires July 6.
