Council Hears Pleas for Federal Money

Share

Representatives of more than two dozen social service organizations told the City Council this week why their programs should receive federal grant money.

The city has received $8.4 million in community development block grant money for the 1997-98 fiscal year, and is authorized to allocate up to $1.26 million for social services.

City staff members, working with the Human Relations Commission, have recommended that $1 million be given to more than a dozen programs. Under the recommendations, most of the money would go to programs run by the city.

The council delayed a decision on the allocations until the next meeting, April 21.

“It’s a very tough process,” said Mayor Miguel A. Pulido Jr., “and money is short.”
