Capistrano Trustees Mull Elective Credits

Share

A proposal to enable high school students to earn elective credits for certain courses at Saddleback College will be considered Monday by trustees of Capistrano Unified School District.

Under the concurrent college studies program, students would be able to sign up for courses at Saddleback and earn credits toward their high school diplomas.

Among other criteria, students would have to be enrolled in a minimum of five classes on their regular campuses; would have to be juniors or seniors, or have special approval from the administration to join the program; and would enroll in Saddleback classes only before or after regular school hours.

The college courses available to students would cover a range of subjects, among them accounting, fine arts, geography and sociology. Many of the courses would be in subjects that are not part of the district’s high school curriculum now, according to a district report.

Students’ grades in the college courses will be recorded on the student’s high school transcripts and counted as Saddleback College credits, transferable to the University of California and California State University systems.

The school board will meet at 6 p.m. at the district office, 32972 Calle Perfecto.
