Motorist Dies in Collision; Cyclist Killed

In separate accidents Friday, a bicyclist was struck by a car and killed, and a driver died when his car overturned.

One occurred in the 2200 block of East Chapman Avenue in Fullerton when a car struck a bicyclist and threw him against a light pole. The driver did not stop, and a police sergeant discovered the victim at 2:06 a.m.

The name of the 53-year-old bicyclist was withheld until relatives could be notified.

The second accident occurred at 1:08 a.m. in Irvine when a Volvo overturned, trapping the driver inside, police said. The 31-year-old driver, Armando Rios Tovar of Costa Mesa, died at the scene, police said.

Police said a Ford van had been traveling south on Irvine Center Drive when it collided with the right side of the Volvo headed south on Alton Parkway.

The driver of the van was treated for a concussion and released, police said.

One of the drivers ran a red light, police said, but they have not determined which one.
