Multi-City Agency Seeking Rezoning

An intergovernmental group goes before the City Council tonight with a request to expand its offices.

The California Joint Powers Insurance Authority, which administers self-insurance for about 80 cities, wants to enlarge its offices at 4952 La Palma Ave. The agency is now in a 6,600-square-foot building, city officials said, and seeks an additional 10,000 square feet of office space on adjacent land.

Two buildings would be constructed, said Joan M. Hoesterey, city management planning assistant.

“The [agency’s] existing building will remain and be remodeled in an early California architectural style to match the two proposed buildings,” according to Hoesterey’s report.

The insurance authority’s office on La Palma Avenue is at Moody Street. The expansion request calls for building at 8061, 8071 and 8081 Moody St. Hoesterey said land would have to be rezoned if council members approve the request.

Although the three lots are zoned for residential use, Hoesterey said the land already has “nonconforming uses.” Some is being used as a recreational-vehicle storage yard and as an impounded-auto business, she said.

In its role as Planning Commission, the council will hold a public hearing on the expansion request at tonight’s meeting. The council won’t vote on the issue until its May 6 meeting.
