Sexually transmitted diseases are too rarely discussed or dealt with openly, but an estimate of the annual incidence of selected STDs in 1994 is staggering.

AIDS: 80,000

Hepatitis B: 53,000

Chancroid: 3,500

Congenital syphilis: 3,400
