County Earmarks Funds for Land

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has set aside $1.2 million in park funds to buy open space in the Santa Clarita Valley, Supervisor Mike Antonovich’s office announced Tuesday.

The money--from Proposition A park funds--will be used to purchase portions of San Francisquito Canyon and the Santa Clara River from private parties by October, the announcement said.

The city of Santa Clarita will contribute about $5 million in matching funds for the acquisitions.

Antonovich, who represents the area, said he chose to spend 5th Supervisorial District Proposition A funds for the purchases because portions of the land have been classified as significant ecological areas, home to rare plants or animals.

“I’m pleased to be able to join with the city in this acquisition program,” Antonovich said in a news release. “These lands have significant value to the community and should be set aside for the enjoyment of all.”
