College to Celebrate International Women

A film festival, Aztec dancers, information booths, speakers and art displays will all be part of a program celebrating International Women’s Day on Friday at Valley College.

Although the actual observance came in March, Alison Scallorns, program chairwoman for the Associated Student Union, said organizers had to adapt to the campus schedule. “This is the earliest we could get space for it,” she said.

The event, sponsored by the college and the ASU, will be split into two parts: a free section from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a section from 7 to 9 p.m. costing $3 for the general public and $2 for ASU members.

The film festival, scheduled for the first session, will include screenings of “The Burning Times,” an examination of witch burnings and other methods of torture employed by organized religions; “Fast Food Women,” which depicts women struggling to raise families while working in the fast-food industry; and “Wild Women Don’t Get the Blues,” about pioneering blues artists such as Bessie Smith.

From 7 to 9 p.m., performances will include female Aztec dancers and African American folk dances.

Events will be held in the Fireside Room, Monarch Hall and Monarch Square at the college, 5800 Fulton Ave.
