Children’s Fair Will Focus on Fun, Safety

Share

Fun and safety will be the focus of Children’s Day in the Park on Saturday at the Camarillo Community Center.

Fair organizers say this will be Camarillo’s largest children’s resource fair yet, with a traffic safety class, bike rodeo, bike safety demonstrations and information about child care, summer camps and recreational opportunities.

“This fair puts all the different opportunities for kids and their parents to do in a one-stop resource center so they can find out everything there is to do in Camarillo for kids,” said Rick Fields, recreation supervisor for the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District. This year’s fair will incorporate the Brandon Gentry Memorial Safety Day, with the Las Posas Parent Teacher Council providing identification bracelets, necklaces and shoestring I.D.s for $5.

Brandon, 12, died Nov. 8 from massive head injuries sustained Nov. 1 when he crossed the road in Camarillo on his skateboard and was struck by a car. Brandon was not wearing a helmet and had no identification on him, according to the Parent Teacher Council.

As part of the safety day, the Camarillo Police Department will conduct the traffic safety class for kids, a bike rodeo with demonstrations by the Police Bike Patrol Unit and bicycle I.D. engraving. The Explorer Unit will fingerprint children.

Other activities will include sidewalk chalk activities, face painting, slime making and other arts and crafts. Entertainment will include Pam Cohen’s youth dance classes, Flores Brother’s Karate Studio and the Pleasant Valley High Steppers. Refreshments will be available.

This is the fourth year the Camarillo Child Care Advisory Council and the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District have organized the event. The fair will be held at 1605 E. Burnley St. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
