Board Won’t Rethink Rejection of Pep Boys

The City Council won’t reconsider a proposal to build a Pep Boys retail store and automotive service facility in the Imperial Rose Shopping Center.

More than a dozen residents opposed to the project urged the council this week not to rehear it.

Residents who live near the site said the 18,560-square-foot retail and automotive service facility would add noise and traffic and affect their quality of life.

In February, the city Planning Commission had approved the project, but residents appealed that decision to the council.

The council on March 18 voted 3 to 2 to deny the project, with council members saying that it is not compatible with adjacent homes.

Following the council’s denial, Pep Boys asked the city to reconsider the project, saying the company is willing to take corrective actions to mitigate concerns.

But after the council heard the strong opposition from residents, the item died. There was no motion to reconsider it.

In other matters, the council approved a request by the Boys and Girls Club of Placentia for $25,000 to help pay its insurance and utility bills and other operation costs.

Ruben Alvarez Jr., the club’s executive director, said he was elated to receive the assistance. He said the club is in dire need of funding and that the board of directors has a goal to raise $150,000.

Councilwoman Maria Moreno said she strongly supports the 35-year-old club because “these programs play a very important role” in the community.
