Man to Stand Trial in Slaying of Officer
An Inglewood Municipal Court judge on Thursday ordered Roger Hoan Brady, the son of a TV newsman, to stand trial on charges of murdering Manhattan Beach Police Officer Martin Ganz, who died on Dec. 27, 1993, while making a late-night traffic stop at the Manhattan Village shopping mall.
Judge John V. Meigs let stand three special circumstance charges that were filed with the murder charge, making it possible that Brady, 31, could be sentenced to death if convicted.
The murder shocked the quiet seaside community where no police officer had been killed before Ganz, 29, was shot down. Ganz was struck by three bullets after pulling over a motorist at the mall while his 13-year-old nephew, who was on a ride-along, looked on.
The nephew was not called as a witness during the preliminary hearing. Instead, Deputy Dist. Atty. Barbara Turner relied on testimony by sheriff’s deputies who investigated the case.
Brady has previously been convicted of the murder of Catalina Correa, a registered nurse slain in Oregon in 1994.
He will be arraigned April 29 in Torrance Superior Court.
