GAME REPORT: DUCKS 4, COYOTES 2

Share

* IN REVIEW: On the ice, the atmosphere was less frenetic than Game 1 and featured tighter checking. The teams exchanged power-play goals and the Ducks finally got a goal from a player other than Teemu Selanne or Paul Kariya, as defenseman Dmitri Mironov scored to tie it, 1-1, at 10:46.

Saves: Anaheim--Guy Hebert 9; Phoenix--Nikolai Khabibulin 17.

* SCORING: Phoenix 1, Ducks 0: With forward Ted Drury off for charging Gerald Diduck, the Coyotes scored a power-play goal to take their first lead of the series on a passing play starting from Cliff Ronning to Jeremy Roenick to defenseman Teppo Numminen, who beat Hebert on the stick side from the right circle at 9:23.

Ducks 1, Phoenix 1: Defenseman Dmitri Mironov scored his first goal of the playoffs--on the power play--on a shot from above the right circle at 10:46, taking a pass across the blue line from J.J. Daigneault, who took advantage of Darrin Shannon’s errant clearing pass.

* KEY PLAYS: The Coyotes avoided falling behind despite taking a few unnecessary penalties--one for delay of game, another for too many men on the ice and one by star forward Keith Tkachuk, who went off for high sticking Sean Pronger in the offensive zone. The Ducks were one for four on the power play with nine shots.

* IN REVIEW: The Ducks didn’t have a shot on goal until 7:03 into the period, and the first shot went in, courtesy of Daigneault’s goal on a two-man advantage. For the first time in the series, the Kariya-Jari Jurri-Selanne line did not have a shot on goal. Daigneault was the most active Duck with six shots through the first two periods. Saves: Hebert 10; Khabibulin 6.

* SCORING: Ducks 2, Phoenix 1: Daigneault scored his first playoff goal, at 7:03, only nine seconds into a five-on-three advantage, beating Khabibulin with a shot from just above the hash marks. Assisting on the goal was Selanne, picking up his fourth point in the series.

* KEY PLAYS: It appeared as though defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky had put Phoenix ahead, 2-1, at 6:05, but the goal was disallowed upon review because Coyote right wing Mike Gartner had his left skate in the crease. . . . Forward Warren Rychel poked the puck away from Khabibulin and forward Ken Baumgartner swept in the rebound at 12:59, but the Duck celebration was premature because Rychel was called for a slashing penalty.

* IN REVIEW: Phoenix Coach Don Hay reunited the Tkachuk-Roenick-Craig Janney line to start the third period, and the move paid off with the game-tying goal within the first four minutes. Hay switched Roenick onto a more physical line with Bob Corkum and Darrin Shannon to start the game. Phoenix buzzed the net, but Daigneault put the Ducks back into the lead, 3-2, with less than seven minutes to play.

Saves: Hebert 17; Khabibulin 8.

* SCORING: Ducks 2, Phoenix 2--Tkachuk evened the score with his second goal of the series, on an even-strength goal at the 3:55 mark.

Ducks 3, Phoenix 2--Daigneault retrieved a long rebound along the left-wing boards after Kariya shot well wide from the right wing, skated behind the net and beat Khabibulin between the pads at the 13:26.

Ducks 4, Phoenix 2--Selanne got the empty-net clincher for his third goal of the playoffs, a slap shot with 6.2 seconds left. It was Selanne’s fifth point of the playoffs.

* KEY PLAYS: Tkachuk converted on a shot Hebert probably should have stopped. . . . Numminen hustled back to tie up Selanne and prevent a breakaway and perhaps the go-ahead goal at the 11:40 mark. . . . Daigneault, pinching in smartly along the boards, picked up the long rebound that lead to the go-ahead goal. . . . Khabibulin left the net for a sixth attacker with 1:08 to play.
